About Us

How can we help you?

Since qualifying as a vet in 2003, I have had the pleasure of caring for amazing pets each day. Professionally, and through my own experience, I’ve learnt that the most difficult part of having a pet is knowing when it is the right time to say goodbye.

During these moments, the last thing you or your pet needs is the added stress of going to the vet which is why I set up Pets at Rest; to offer a bespoke euthanasia service that allows your family to say your goodbyes in the comfort of your own home.

When you call, I am happy to talk through whether it is the right time to say goodbye as well as exploring if other treatments are possible. I offer phone calls and advice free of charge so you can come to the right decision about your pet’s end-of-life care.

Having said goodbye to my own dog, I understand what you will be going through and I will do my very best to support you on their final journey.

If it is the right time, please get in touch with me and I will arrange a visit to your home where you can ask any further questions to ensure that you and your pet feel calm and relaxed in a familiar environment.

The Veterinary Education Pet Gifting Programme

Just as medical schools use humans for teaching purposes, Improve International, one of the UK’s leading veterinary-training companies, also uses animal bodies to help qualified veterinary professionals perfect the latest medical and surgical techniques.

We are fortunate in the UK to have some of the world’s best trained veterinary professionals to care for our pets. However it is vital that these vets receive ongoing training so that they can continually learn new medical and surgical techniques. In this way they can provide the very best of care for our pets. Providing your pet’s body to help in veterinary education could help save a pet’s life in the future.

Frequently asked questions

When is the right time to have my dog or cat put to sleep?

Each situation is unique. As a loving pet owner, we know this is the hardest decision you’ll make, so when it comes to end of life decisions, it’s important that both you and your pet are well cared for. A significant part of this is providing reassurance to families about their decisions. When you reach out to discuss this with us, Rob will guide you through your options. Occasionally, Rob has been able to offer advice and medication that has given families additional days, weeks or months with their pets. However, if your companion needs help sooner or an emergency same day visit, Rob will try his best to respond.

To support you in reaching the right decision, it can be useful to ask yourself some questions to determine your pets’ quality of life. These help you to reflect on how well your pet is coping and keep their well-being at the centre of your decisions.

A Quality of life check has been produced by the wonderful PDSA pet charity. It has useful questions for you to consider.

What will happen when Rob visits?

Rob will provide an arrival window to suit you. He will come in a small electric van that has our familiar brand on it. His clothing is also branded to provide families with security and confidence when letting the right person into their home.

Rob will guide you through the visit at a pace that suits your family. He will make friends with your pet to put them at ease and check they are comfortable. Before the process, he will answer any and all of your questions.

When you are ready, Rob will use a sedative that allows your pet to drift peacefully into a deep sleep over five to ten minutes. He can stay with you at this point or excuse himself so you have privacy. When you are ready, an anaesthetic will be used that enables your beloved pet to slip away peacefully, surrounded by their loved ones.

Rob is empathic and will respond to your needs throughout the visit. Some families like Rob to remain with them throughout each stage while others ask for privacy while they make their final farewells. You and your family will be given all the time and space you need.

Rob will make final checks that your pet is finally at peace and make sure you are ok. Most owners prefer Rob to wrap their pet into a snuggly blanket before transporting them the crematorium but some owners prefer to make their own arrangements.

You will also have the opportunity for fur clippings and paw prints to be taken if this is something you would like. You are also welcome to send any blankets, toys or treats you want to be cremated with with your pet.

There is no right or wrong; the main thing is that you and your family are supported in your choices.

Will my pet feel any pain?

The process is a tried, tested, and humane way to say farewell. Some pets may notice the first sedative being given. This isn’t overly painful but because your pet is relaxed at home, it sometimes catches them off guard. The sedative relaxes your pet into a deep sleep and is followed by an anaesthetic that gradually slows their heart until it gently stops. Because you have chosen a home visit, they will pass much more peacefully, surrounded by familiar smells, sights and sounds.

Gifting your pet

If you choose this option, your pet will be gifted to veterinary training to help improve future pet care. This reduces your costs while still allowing you to provide your pet with the love and care they deserve.

Please note, visits after 7pm have a £50 surcharge.

Will you visit my local area?

We visit the following areas in Yorkshire and Derbyshire:

Sheffield, Chesterfield, Dronfield, Barlow, Rotherham, Barnsley, Stocksbridge, Worksop Doncaster, Wakefield, Matlock, Bakewell, Hathersage, Baslow, Castleton and more.

Depending on availability, we may be able to travel further. This would need to be discussed and may include an additional out of area charge.
